Maranello

Official website: www.comune.maranello.mo.it

Maranello means Ferrari, the most prestigious formula-1 motorcar company, that is based here. The whole territory of Maranello has been literally "breathing" in the red of the horse logo, since Enzo Ferrari chose Maranello to build the plants of his motorcar company, in 1942. Just a few steps from the plant and the track, the Galleria Ferrari has been erected in memory of its founder, to tell the story of the rampant horse's company with the exhibition of pictures, historical relics, vintage cars and Formula One single-seaters. The Wind Tunnel, designed by architect Renzo Piano, to test technological innovation on Ferrari cars, was inaugurated in 1997. More recently, within the context of the celebrations for the hundredth anniversary of the Drake's birth, a monument dedicated to Enzo Ferrari, donated to the town by his son Piero, (a bronze column over five metres high and weighing 13,200 pounds which portrays the most relevant stages of the Drake's life), has been erected in Piazza Libertà, beside the Town Hall, and has already become the meeting point of fans to celebrate the victories of Ferrari cars in Formula One races. The Enzo Ferrari Auditorium, a large multi-purpose hall, will be ready at the end of 1998, to host cultural and sporting events. But Maranello is not only this: it is history, it is art, nature and love for life, as expressed by its traditional feasts. Its undulating territory has hilly features, with magnificent natural views, in the suburbs of Gorzano, Torre Maina, Torre delle Oche, San Venanzio and Fogliano, excellent destinations for excursions in the midst of nature. Nor does it lack significant historical and cultural suggestions, such as the remains of the Bronze Age, and Roman finds, such as the ancient Torre Maina kiln. The historical heart of the village is spread along the ancient Via Claudia, dedicated to consul Claudius. The local feasts include the Day of Maranello's Patron Saint (February 3rd, Day of San Biagio), the Parish Feast (August 15th), the Maranello June events (every weekend of June, with parties, music, shows in the streets).

There are also many events organised by volunteers' associations, such as the Harvest Feast of H.E.W.O. Every year, there are vintage car rallies, organised by the Ferrari Clubs from all over the world, and the "Cronoscalata del Cavallino", a speed uphill speed race along the Maranello-Serramazzoni stretch, has already become an important date to remember - since its first running in July 1998.
